An affidavit was filed by the State Bar Council before the Calcutta HC on Thursday seeking extension of financial aid to those lawyers in need amid the COVID-19 lockdown.

The submission was made in a letter petition pending before the High Court on the issue.

A bench comprising of Chief Justice Thottathil B Radhakrishnan and Justice Arjit Banerjee passed an order stating,

“It appears from the Bar Council’s affidavit-in-opposition that the Council has taken a resolution to make available financial assistance to those learned lawyers who are in extreme need thereof.”

adding to the above the court opined that the decision may be implemented without prejudice to the rights and contentions of the parties in the writ petition and subject to further orders that may be passed.

The Court has further adjourned the matter to be taken up next week, on April 30.
