The apex court on Friday admitted a pleafor bringing home the migrant workers who have been stranded in the gulf countries and are being denied Covid-19 treatment despite testing positive for the virus. The plea has been filed by a migrant welfare society named Pravasi Legal Cell through their advocate Jose Abraham. The same has been filed in the wake of the poor and unhygienic accommodation in which these vulnerable migrant workers are putting up.
The petitioner prays to the court to direct the government to make appropriate arrangements to rescue the Indian Migrant Workers as expeditiously as possible as the conditions in those countries are worsening day by day. It states that,
“The migrant workers in the Gulf countries are being denied treatment in the Hospitals even after testing positive for COVID 19 and are told to stay back in their house or camps itself. This is because the number of patients who are getting infected is going up, there is a shortage of beds in government hospitals.”
Amidst these testing times it has asked the court to remind the government of their constitutional duty towards all its citizens and adds that the government had failed to bring back all Indian Nationals from the gulf countries. The plea states,
“(The) Nature of injury caused or likely to be caused to the public is that the poor migrant workers in Gulf countries are left with no proper remedy and their situation is so worsening day by day. They are very much citizens of India and the government is under constitutional obligation to protect their interest in this extraordinary time which has threatened the very existence of the human race”.
The migrant workers welfare cell has also prayed for financial aid to ensure that food, medicines and other emergency services are provided to the stranded Indian.
