Former Delhi HC Judge, Justice Sunil Gaur appointed as Claims Commissioner for North-East Delhi Riots

The Delhi Government has approved the appointment of former Delhi High Court Judge, Justice (retd) Sunil Gaur as ‘Claims Commissioner’ for the Delhi riots that broke out in the city’s North-East area.

Justice DN Patel (CJI Delhi HC) had named Justice Gaur as the Claims Commissioner last month in terms of the law laid down by the Supreme Court in the case of Destruction of Public and Private Property vs State of Andhra Pradesh.

Justice Gaur shall be entitled to the following facilities during his term:

  • Emoluments, allowances and facilities, including a chauffer driven vehicle, secretarial assistance etc equivalent to that of a sitting judge of the High Court of Delhi.
  • Requisite office with sufficient staff.
  • Appropriate security considering the sensitive nature of the subject matter.
  •  Any other requirement as may be determined by the Claims Commissioner himself to enable him to smoothly perform the task assigned.

The term of Justice Gaur as Claims Commissioner shall be for a period of six months, subjected to extensions.
