On 16th July 2020, the Supreme Court refused to entertain a petition seeking uniform education system for children aged between 6-14 years across the country.
The plea was declined by the Bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud which had an aim to mergeICSE and CBSE and enable a common syllabus and curriculum, under “One Nation One Education Board.”
The Court was of the opinion that it was not appropriate for it to interfere in such matters, as the plea pertained within the ambit of a Policy decision.
Justice Chandrachud in case of One education board said, “How can you ask the court to merge one board with the other? These are not the functions of the court.”
Justice Chandrachud in regards to the main issue raised by the petitioner further highlighted that “our students are already burdened with heavy school bags on their shoulders. Why do you want to add to their burden by adding more books?”
