The FIR against Arnab Goswami and family has been lodged by SG Tanvade under Sections 353 (deterring public servant from discharging duty), 504 and 506 (provoking breach of peace) of the Indian Penal Code and under provisions of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.

Allegations in the FIR against Arnab Goswami and Family

In her statement, Tanvade submits that the incident leading to the complaint arose when Tanvade with other officers of the Mumbai Police had accompanied the unit from the Raigad police for arresting Arnab Goswami in the 2018 Anvay Naik abetment of suicide case that was recently re-opened.

Tanvade in FIR against Arnab Goswami and family alleges that while Arnab was being arrested, he and his son assaulted the police officers. She adds that Goswami obstructed the officers from carrying out their duty by threatening to take action against them.

“I am a journalist, I will ensure action is taken against the police.”

Tanvade (in her statement) cites Arnab as having said (in Marathi)

Tanvade in FIR against Arnab Goswami and family added that Goswami’s wife tore an official arrest document which was handed over to her for her signatures. She alleges that the paper was torn after Goswami ordered his wife not to sign any papers given by the police.

Before tearing the paper, Goswami’s wife wrote on the paper “forcibly picked up” in the place allocated for her signatures. After the police officers told her to not do so, she tore the paper.

Tanvade concludes her statement by stating that the accused in the FIR took all measures to ensure that Arnab could not be arrested by the police and hence she was compelled to file this FIR.

Goswami was produced before the Alibaug Court on Wednesday in another FIR filed in 2018 in connection with the suicide of interior designer Anvay Naik. The Alibaug Court remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days on Wednesday.
