Call for Papers: Modern Studies in Property Law 2022 St John’s College, University of Oxford (29th -31st March 2022): Submit by Aug 31, 2021

The 14th Biennial MSPL Conference will take place at St John’s College, University of Oxford, from Tuesday 29th – Thursday 31^st March 2022. The call for papers is now open. The closing date for submissions is Tuesday 31 August 2021.

As in previous years, a dedicated PGR conference will be held on Thursday 31 March 2022. Further details and a call for papers for the PGR conference will be released in the autumn.

About MSPL

MSPL is a world-leading forum for scholars with research and/or teaching interests in property law, attracting an international body of delegates. The conference series has its origins in the biennial conference first held by the University of Reading in 1996. Those conferences gave rise to the well-regarded book series, Modern Studies in Property Law which has published refereed papers from the conference since 2001. The conference has previously been held at Queens’ College, Cambridge (2008), New College, Oxford (2010), the University of Southampton (2012), the University of Liverpool (2014), Queen’s University Belfast (2016), and University College London (2018).

About MSPL 2022

We expect to hold the 2022 conference in-person at St John’s College, Oxford, with an option for virtual participation. On-site accommodation at special rates will be available to delegates and speakers attending in person. If an in-person conference is not possible, arrangements will be made for a fully online conference.

We are delighted to announce that keynote lectures will be delivered by the Rt Hon Lord Sales JSC (Justice of the UK Supreme Court), Professor Jeremy Waldron (New York University), and Professor Sarah Green (Law Commission for England and Wales).

Call for Papers

The main conference will feature three different formats for presenting original research on property law: full papers, work in progress sessions, and micro-presentations. ‘Property law’ is broadly defined to include doctrinal, theoretical, empirical and socio-legal perspectives on any aspect of property in the common law tradition, including real property, personal property, trusts, and equity. We welcome interdisciplinary and comparative perspectives.

Full papers

Full papers should be in the region of 8,000-10,000 words. A selection of these papers will be published in the associated conference book, Modern Studies in Property Law, which will continue to be produced by Hart Publishing (Bloomsbury). In submitting a full paper, you are agreeing for this paper to be considered for publication in this book. All full papers presented

at the conference will need to be available as a complete draft 3 weeks before the conference. Revised drafts will be required 3 weeks after the conference. A process of peer-review will determine inclusion in the collection.

Work in progress

Works in progress sessions will involve discussion of projects at an earlier stage of completion. Papers in this category will not be eligible for submission to the conference collection, but the expectation is that the sessions will provide constructive feedback useful in bringing a project at an earlier stage of completion to fruition. An outline handout or draft paper will be required 3 weeks before the conference.

Micro-presentations

These sessions offer the opportunity to informally discuss a research project with conference delegates during breaks in the conference, in virtual break-out rooms or in person. PGR students will also be offered this opportunity as part of integration between the PGR and main Conference proceedings.

Submission details

Proposals for full papers and work in progress presentations should be sent to mspl@law.ox.ac.uk by Tuesday 31 August 2021.  Proposals should:

1. Indicate the category for which they are submitted, either (1) full paper or (2) work in progress.
2. Include a short abstract of the paper (300 words)
3. Include a very brief author CV (just a few lines)

The decision as to which papers to accept is made by a panel of property lawyers. For full papers, results will be communicated in September 2021; for works in progress presentations, decisions will be communicated by the end of November 2021.

Proposals for micro-presentations may also be submitted at this time, but there will also be a further call with additional information in due course.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to offer any funding towards the travel costs or the costs of attending the conference, even for speakers.
