About the Book

Topic: Relevance of Duties in Contemporary World with Particular Emphasis on Gandhian Thought

In present times, the growing assertion of rights often ignores the importance of duties as its correlative. Individuals in our society, by and large, are well occupied in identifying their rights; often overlooking their duties. This has been a great casualty to duties in our society, which is identified and recognised as a duty-based (Dharma-based) society. Without the proper observance of duties, rights remain a dead letter in a void domain.

In this context, Gandhiā€™s thoughts on duties become pertinent to address the prevailing challenges of society.  In Gandhiā€™s view duties are more fundamental than rights because the latter springs from the former and ensure its better implementation. As he points out ā€œBegin with a charter of the Duties of Man, and I promise the rights will follow as spring follows winter.ā€ Gandhian Swaraj means the sum total of the swaraj (self-rule) of individuals and such Swaraj emanates only from the performance of duties by citizens without having strong reservations for their rights.

They are inviting chapters focusing on (but not restricted to) the following themes:

  1. Duty as Source of Rights
  2. Community Interests vs. Individuality
  3. Priority of Duties over Rights
  4. Relevance of Duties in the Present Age
  5. Gandhian thought on Duties in Indian Jurisprudence
  6. Gandhi and Fundamental Duties
  7. Gandhian Duty in Indian Education
  8. Target Audience

The book would attract a wide range of audience comprising students, researchers, and academics from law, political science, sociology as well as general readers. The book undertakes a critical analysis of the topic with a research-based approach to unravel the unexplored facts and provide fresh insights relating to it. This would generate great interest among the readers for the book.

Purpose and Need

The purpose of the book is to reflect on the significance of duties in creating an egalitarian society by collating and contextualizing the relevant literature. The book seeks to make a particular appreciation of Gandhiā€™s views on duty as they are pertinent to create a cohesive, responsible and value-based society in the present right-dominated world. A viable solution to the current real-world problems could be found in exploring the philosophy on duties and the book is a humble attempt to provide relevant literature in this regard.
