As “The Economics of Constitutionalism: Principles and Practice” course by CLS-NLUO comes to a successful conclusion, a panel discussion with some of our eminent course instructors will be held on 6th February from 3p.m. to 5p.m. The theme of the discussion is “Emerging trends in Constitutional Economics in India and its Place in the Global Scenario”.
About Constitutional Law Society (CLS-NLUO)
The Constitutional Law Society (CLS) of National Law University Odisha was established in 2018 with a vision to provide a platform for public discourse and deliberation vis-à-vis Constitutional Law. CLS seeks to supplement an accessible forum for intellectual discourse and shape the discussion of the most important and relevant issues of constitutional law through meticulous scholarship, public lectures and seminars, and research through independent projects, conferences, and co-operation with other institutions and individuals engaged in constitutional study. CLS endeavours through the course of its activities to foster awareness about the subject and its importance. The purpose behind the establishment of the Society is to generate debate and dialogue on various nuances of the subject of Constitutional Law.
About the Panelists
Prof. Mukul Asher
Prof. Asher obtained Ph. D. in Economics from Washington State University in 1972. He was a faculty member with the Department of Economics, and later with the Lee Kuan Yew school of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore for over four decades. He has been a Visiting Faculty at the Asian Public Policy Program at Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo since the early 2000s. He is associated with several Indian think-tanks. He is a Distinguished fellow at Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Research Foundation (SPMRF) in New Delhi; and Senior Adjunct Fellow at Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) in New Delhi. His research focuses on public financial management, pension reform, and on expanding India ‘s geo-economic and geo-strategic space. His stellar list of research and publications includes reputed national and international journals and over 16 books.
Dr. K.P Krishnan
Dr. Krishnan is a retd. IAS officer (1983 batch) and has served in various field and secretariat positions in India in the Government of Karnataka and Government of India. He also served as Adviser to the Executive Director (Dr. Bimal Jalan), World Bank during 1994-97 and as Secretary, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister from July 01, 2010 till 13th August, 2012. He is the IEPF Chair Professor in Regulatory Economics, established with the support of the Investor Education and Protection Fund Authority of the Government of India. Prior to his retirement from public service, he served as the Union Secretary in the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. Trained in economics, finance, and law, Dr Krishnan has chaired or served as a member of several Government of India committees, including the Krishnan Committee on Cross Border Insolvency Rules/Regulation Committee, the Krishnan Committee on Comprehensive Regulation of Credit Rating Agencies, the T K Viswanathan Committee on Reform of Bankruptcy Laws in India.
Mr. Lalit Panda
Mr. Panda is a graduate of the Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar, and has been working in the Public Law team at the Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, New Delhi since 2017. Prior to joining Vidhi, he worked briefly as a Consultant with the 21st Law Commission of India. At Vidhi, he has worked in the broad areas of law and technology, regulation, and constitutional law, providing legal and policy research on subjects such as data protection, higher education, election law, and fiscal federalism as a Samvidhaan Fellow, his interest lies in interdisciplinary research into the equal protection guarantee in the Indian Constitution, examining a range of recent and long-standing controversies regarding the right to equality through the lens of Law & Economics. It shall be a moderated discussion moderated by Ms. Rishika Khare (Faculty advisor of CLS-NLUO and Assistant Professor of Law) which will then end in a Question & Answer session with the students. This panel discussion will provide attendees with an opportunity to discuss the contemporary developments on the issues
