About Student for Liberty
Students For Liberty (SFL) is the largest international pro-liberty student organization across the globe in terms of leaders, countries represented, and events. We are thoroughly trained and professional. We have a high level of understanding of the ideas of liberty and can clearly and effectively explain the economic and philosophical rationale for the issues we stand for.
Rising above partisan politics, we engage in open and civil discourse over how to best promote freedom in all aspects of our lives. We respect that everyone comes to their justification for liberty in their own way and we are supportive of them in that journey. Liberty creates a better world and our message surrounding the ideas are welcoming, positive, and inspiring.
About the Competition
A turncoat debate is a style of debating in which an individual is allotted a certain amount of time to speak on the given motion. The debater has to divide the time allotted to them in equal halves wherein they speak for the motion in the first half and then halfway through, they go against the very same thing. So it has to be, for example, two minutes of speaking in favour of the motion and the other two against it, in case the allotted time is four minutes. The very reason why it’s called turncoat, you change your stance midway through your speech, turning away 180° from the place you set yourself in the discourse. In the simplest of words, liberty is the freedom to think, and to express ourselves. Intellectual responsibility stems from the realization that there is no eternal, unchanging or absolute truth. We at Students for Liberty bring to you a turncoat debate competition because we believe in the core value of liberty- growth.
