ABOUT NUJS SACJ
The Society for Advancement of Criminal Justice (SACJ) is an academic society at NUJS which strives to bolster the discourse on criminal law and justice. By organising various events and competitions, the society provides a wide scope to all the students interested in criminal law and criminology to hone pursuant skills and develop better understanding and applicability.
ABOUT THE PANEL DISCUSSION
The theme of the session will be “ARMED FORCES SPECIAL POWERS ACT: A PERSPECTIVAL UNDERSTANDING”. The Armed Forces Special Powers Act was introduced into the administrative and legal arena in the Northeast in 1958 through an ordinance and later received Parliamentary sanction by a series of Acts created by the Indian Parliament that empowers Armed Forces to maintain public order in disturbed areas and to gain a grip on deteriorating law and order situation in all seven states.
In the recent developments, several northeastern states, including the Nagaland cabinet have passed a resolution urging the Centre to repeal AFSPA.
Considering the utmost relevance of the theme in contemporary times, the organizers want more and more students and professionals interested in the topic to enrich themselves by attending the session.
The session will be conducted on Zoom and will be live-streamed on the SACJ YouTube channel.
ABOUT THE PANELISTS
1) Maj. Gen. PK Sharma (retd.). –
Maj. Gen. Praveen Kumar Sharma (retd.) is currently serving as the Director and Professor at Amity Law School, Gurugram. Among his many achievements was serving the Indian Army for almost four decades, eventually retiring as a Judge Advocate General.
2) Col. R Balasubramanian VSM (retd.), Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India. He has served the JAG department for more than four decades. He was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal in 2006 by the President for his distinguished service. Mr. Balasubramanian also served in the United Nations as its legal advisor, winningcommendations from the Special Representative of the U.N. Secretary General and Force Commander United Nations for “exceptional devotion to peace-keeping duties” in the United Nations Missions in Ethiopia and Eritrea.In the Supreme Court, he has represented the government and assisted in high-stakes cases like the Rafale deal.
3) Ms Patricia Mukhim –She is am Indian social activist, writer, journalist and the editor of Shillong Times known for her social activism. She was honoured by the Government of India, in 2000, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.
She is deeply involved in the social upliftment activities of the Meghalaya people and is the director of Indigenous Women’s Resource Centre, Shillong.
4)Prof. (Dr.) YSR Murthy-
A former civil servant from the 1985 batch of IAS and Allied Services, he held many responsible and sensitive assignments including in the National Human Rights Commission, Prime Minister’s Office, President’s Secretariat and Cabinet Secretariat. He is presently serving as the Vice Chancellor of RV University, Bangalore.
The session would be moderated by Mr. Avantik Tamta, a Prathiba Singh Cambridge Trust IP Scholar. He is a Professor of Law at OP Jindal Global University, and also a guest faculty in International Human rights law at NUJS, Kolkata.

The session is scheduled on 8th January 2022, at 3:30 PM.
This is to inform everyone that the session will be a virtual one (on Zoom) which will be virtually moderated and will be live-streamed on the SACJ YouTube channel (CLICK HERE).

Considering the utmost relevance of the theme in contemporary times, such as the controversies arising in the North-East, we want more and more students and professionals interested in the topic to enrich themselves by attending the session.
There are no eligibility criteria or registration charges for attending the session. To promote discourse in the subject, we have kept it an open session and anyone interested in the topic can attend the session by getting themselves registered at HERE. It is mandatory to register in order to attend the event on Zoom.
